On April 9 1876 Fred and Moses Manuel Hank Harney and Alex Engh discovered a gold outcropping near Lead south Dakota: they claimed their find and named it the Homestake. The Homestake gold mine produced over 40 million ounces of gold from 1878 to 2002. The mine was closed in 2002.
